When you have a compact home, filling the home with the essentials without making it look cramped becomes a priority. So, when Sonam Jain and her husband Varun Shanghvi decided to get the interiors of their compact 2BHK in Mumbai done by Livspace, interior designer Heny Savla suggested steering clear of readymade furniture. The solution? Go custom!
What could have turned out like hundreds of other compact homes was transformed, with Heny’s expert touch, into a glamorous home that fits the couple perfectly. So let’s peek in first!
First, before getting down to the design, what is custom-made?
Custom-made furniture is made according to the specifications of a customer. With such furniture, the customer can pick the design, material, colour and finish for the articles they intend to purchase, and it will be crafted for them. While mass-produced goods are affordable, with custom furniture, you can personalise the design down to the T.
Let’s talk about all the custom interiors we did for this family
In the living and dining area as well as the master bedroom, Heny used plenty of silver and glass to open up the compact home. She designed the living room with a custom-made gleaming silver sofa, that stands out against a maroon wall. The crafted L-shaped sofa also fits snugly into the corner, without an inch of space being lost.
Heny had all the furniture in the dining area tailor-made to size to have optimum usage of space. The choice of colours and materials reflects light and opens up the compact home too.
Check out the mirror paneling on the master bedroom wall, and the clear glass study table with floating shelves. It’s no coincidence that the glass table takes just the right amount of space—Heny had it customised to fit the nook perfectly. Despite the bedroom in this compact home having all the essentials, the space does not look cramped. Since the furniture was customised, the designer as well as the homeowner could choose the right material for each piece and provide the dimensions of the finished product. The result—a compact space that looks larger than life. What’s more, it’s easy to clean too!
Since Sonam and Varun didn’t want to change the flooring in the guest bedroom, Heny helped them find the perfect shade of synthetic leather that looked right for the fully panelled wall. Since the room is on the smaller side, the couple wanted a bed that fit in perfectly (the typical option would have been to settle for an awkwardly-sized bed). So Heny put in a custom-made white floating bed tucked into a corner with an attached side board.
We completed the look with handcrafted items too
Handcrafted furniture, as the name suggests, is made and assembled by an artisan, all by hand.
After carefully choosing each piece of furniture for the home, it was obvious that Heny would be just as careful about the soft furnishings. So in the bedroom, she suggested a plush handcrafted velvet headboard that adds to the luxurious feel of the room. Heny sourced handcrafted curtains as well! They come with delicate French knots that add a subtle element of elegance to the space.
The cushions in the living room are the epitome of luxury. Careful craftsmanship shows in the detailed embroidery of each piece! At the same time, they tie in with the broader colour scheme of the home.
